Chicago 5, Kansas City 2 in fifth annual Integrated Baseball All-Star Game

Sept. 8, 1923 (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) - A flurry of bunts and stolen bases helped right-handed pitcher Bill "Plunk" Drake get the win and left-handed pitcher Andy Cooper get the save for Chicago in a 5-2 victory over Kansas City at Muehlebach Field in Kansas City, Missouri, in the fifth annual annual Integrated Baseball All-Star Game with teams of players from the National League, American League, Negro National League, and other negro leagues.

Bill "Plunk" Drake
Chicago's center fielder and lead-off hitter Oscar Charleston scored in the first inning after reaching base on a single and then stealing second so that third baseman Ghost Marcelle could knock him to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then first baseman Bill Terry sent Charleston home on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Chicago extended its lead in the top of the second when right fielder Ross Youngs reached second on a double, shortstop Dave Bancroft moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt, and catcher Frank Duncan sent him home on a single.

Kansas City answered in the bottom of the second when first baseman Jim Bottomley hit a triple and third baseman Pie Traynor sent him home by reaching first on a squeeze bunt.

In the bottom of the third, Kansas City tied it up on a home run by right fielder Babe Ruth.

The game broke open in the top of the seventh after Chicago shortstop Joe Sewell hit a double, Duncan followed with a single, and Drake reached first on a bunt to score Sewell. Kansas City starting right-handed pitcher Red Faber then walked Chicago center fielder Chaney White. Then with no outs and bases loaded, third baseman Marcelle hit into a 6-4-3 double play to score Duncan, and Drake crossed the plate when Terry hit a bouncer to center field where Kansas City's center fielder Bullet Joe Rogan missed the hop.
