Kansas City 7, Chicago 5 in second annual integrated all-star game

Dave Bancroft
Sept. 5, 1921 (CHICAGO) - Kansas City took the lead in the top of the fifth inning to beat Chicago 7-5 here at Cubs Park in the second annual Integrated Baseball All-Star Game with teams of players from the National League, American League, Negro National League, and other negro leagues.

Kansas City took the game-winning lead in the top of the fifth when K.C. shortstop Dave Bancroft hit a two-run triple off Chicago starting right-handed pitcher Dick "Cannonball" Redding to score first baseman George Sisler and catcher Larry "Iron Man" Brown to give Kansas City's starting right-handed pitcher Red Faber the win. Waite Hoyt got the save, and Redding took the loss.

Hurley McNair
The game got going quickly in the top of the first inning when Kansas City left fielder Hurley McNair hit a two-run homer that followed second baseman Rogers Hornsby's lead-off double.

But then in the bottom of the first, Kansas City ran into trouble when four Chicago players in a row reached base, and then Faber allowed third baseman Home Run Baker to knock in right fielder Charles Blackwell on a well-placed single to put Chicago ahead 5-2.

Larry "Iron Man" Brown
Faber's troubles continued in the bottom of the second when he allowed four runs, the first on a sacrifice fly to center by Blackwell to score catcher Ray Schalk, then two more on Chicago shortstop Dick Lundy's two-RBI single to score Redding and center fielder Oscar Charleston, and one more on a single by Baker. Lundy finally committed the third out to end the inning when he attempted to reach home from second on left fielder Fats Jenkins' single to right, but K.C.'s Sam Rice slung a rocket to home and "Iron Man" Brown stood his ground at the plate and held on to the ball to tag Lundy for the out.

Kansas City tied it up 5-5- in the top of the third on a three-run homer by Rice who knocked in Sisler and McNair.

In the top of the seventh, Sisler stole second and then took a big lead toward third, but when Chicago right fielder Harry Hooper hit a line drive to Frank Warfield, the Kansas City second baseman made the solo double play with the catch and the base tag.

George Sisler
For Kansas City, both Bancroft and third baseman Candy Jim Taylor hit triples while Sisler and Hornsby hit doubles. McNair and Rice hit homers, with Rice getting three RBIs. Sisler also captured two stolen bases in this game. Only Chicago's Jose Mendez hit for multiple bases with a double. The crowd was treated to three double plays, two by Chicago and one by Kansas City.
