Chicago 4, Kansas City 3 in inaugural Integrated Baseball All-Star Game

Frank Wickware
Sept. 6, 1920 (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) - Relief pitcher Frank Wickware, a tall right-hander with a fearsome fastball, got the win for Chicago in the first annual Integrated Baseball All-Star Game. Chicago won 4-3 in a comeback victory over Kansas City at Association Park in Kansas City, Missouri.

The cities of Chicago and Kansas City agreed to sponsor and Kansas City agreed to host this integrated game with teams of players from the National League, American League, Negro National League and other negro leagues.

Spot Poles
In the early innings, with Kansas City starting left-handed pitcher Rube Marquard on the mound, it looked as though Kansas City had the game well-in-hand for the home crowd. To keep things interesting for the fans, the umpires allowed Chicago third baseman Jose Mendez to pitch in relief for Kansas City. He caught right fielder Babe Ruth and second baseman Eddie Collins looking in a three-up, three-down inning. Mendez then returned to the Chicago squad to finish out the game in the infield.

Dizzy Dismukes
Kansas City's lead reached a crescendo in in the bottom of the sixth inning when the team's right fielder Spot Poles reached base on a fielder's choice; then while attempting to steal second, Chicago catcher Bruce Petway overthrew Collins, and Poles made it to third. Poles then scored on a squeeze bunt by Kansas City second baseman Bingo DeMoss to put K.C. ahead 3-1. However, in the top of the seventh inning, Kansas City right-handed pitcher Dizzy Dismukes gave up six hits and allowed three earned runs to put Chicago up 4-3 and to give the Windy City team the win.

At the plate, Kansas City left fielder "Shoeless" Joe Jackson reached base twice in three at-bats and scored one run while teammate and third baseman Candy Jim Taylor also reached base twice in four at-bats for the losing team. For Chicago, Petway reached base twice in four at-bats and scored one run and right fielder Harry Heilmann hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning, the game's only homer.

"Shoeless" Joe Jackson
The crowd witnessed four stolen bases in this game, one each by Chicago left fielder Zack Wheat and first baseman George Sisler and Kansas City first baseman Ben Taylor and Poles.
