Kansas City 7, Chicago 5 in fourth annual Integrated Baseball All-Star Game

Eppa Rixey
Sept. 3, 1923 (CHICAGO) - A left-handed pitching platoon with a right-handed closer shut down opposing bats for most of the game to give Kansas City a 7-5 win over Chicago here at Comiskey Park to win the fourth annual annual Integrated Baseball All-Star Game with teams of players from the National League, American League, Negro National League, and other negro leagues.

Kansas City starting left-handed pitcher Eppa Rixey got the win and right-hander Rube Currie got the save as left-handed starter Herb Pennock took the loss for Chicago.

Tank Carr
Kansas City scored first in the top of the third inning when first baseman Tank Carr reached base on a single, stole second, and then stole third with a good lead on a swing-and-miss hit-and-run attempt by center fielder Cristobal Torriente. Carr then reached home on Torriente's ground out to first.

Chicago answered in the bottom of the fourth when right-fielder Babe Ruth hit a lead-off home run off left-handed pitcher Eppa Rixey.

Babe Ruth
But things fell apart for Chicago starting pitcher Herb Pennock in the top of the fifth. First, Rixey hit a single and then reached third on Carr's midfield single. Carr then stole second to put runners on second and third, and Torriente hit past the infield to knock in Rixey and Carr. Left fielder Oscar Heavy Johnson then got on base on a walk, and right fielder Harry Heilmann sent both Torriente and Johnson home on a double. Catcher Frank Duncan scored Heilmann on another double before Pennock could end the half-inning with the score Kansas City 6, Chicago 1.

Frank Warfield
Kansas City added to their lead in the top of the seventh when second baseman Frank Warfield opened with a lead-off single and then stole second. Warfield reached third on a hit and run by third baseman Ghost Marcelle, and then Warfield raced home on a squeeze bunt by shortstop Rabbit Maranville for the score.

Chicago responded in the bottom of the seventh with relief pitcher Jesse Haines reaching base on a single, and then after shortstop Travis Jackson got a walk, Haines reached third on first baseman Lou Gehrig's groundball hit into a double play. Haines then touched home on a single by center fielder John Donaldson. But it wasn't enough, and after nine, Kansas City beat Chicago 7-5.

Carr managed three hits and three stolen bases for Kansas City in this matchup while Torriente and Heilmann racked up two RBI apiece. Torriente and Warfield each stole a base.
